Covid 19 update
I recently had a thankfully mild dose of this nasty disease. It has messed up my schedule so please bear in mind that I'm something like 2 months behind.
Birch plywood kitchens at mainstream prices
Most reasonably priced kitchen cabinets are made melamine faced chipboard. It's a good material for this purpose, but if you want something nicer my units are made from 18mm birch plywood. This robust material is made up from thin layers of hardwood laminated in alternating directions. The insides of my cabinets are finished with an expensive German made hard wax/oil and the outsides, where they show, are painted to match the door colour.
The doors are made from American tulipwood, which like birch, is a hardwood. They are painted in a robust water-based paint which can be mixed to any colour you would like.
Ordinary kitchen cabinets are only available in certain widths, usually in increments of 100mm. This can be a real nuisance if you are trying to come up with a balanced, symmetrical design. My cabinets are made to the nearest 1mm, so widths such as 865mm ar no problem, and custom widths are the same price as standards.
